I've already pegged the Prius in retrospect. It'll be like the Beetle with less than half the love. We kid ourselves now, but in some respects the Beetle is kind of tragically awful as a driver's car, and was bought by a mix of the practical, the economically-minded, and a wide assortment of starry-eyed nutcases who were Not Our People as far as enthusiasm goes. Ubiquitous, loved by some... odd people, and bought often to always as a statement. The difference this time around is that the Prius is more reliable and less quirky, so rather than forcing its owners into love, hate, or both, it'll drift to the wayside. The fact that it's harder to modify than a Beetle is also a deathknell for long-lasting public connection. The Beetle is lovable for reasons which don't really have to do that much with its car qualities, and at the same time have everything to do with them.

So yeah, the Prius will be the Beetle, only it sucks more by sucking less.
